Cultural Competency for Health Professionals

Health professionals (physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, health coaches, dietitians, etc.) often work with clients and patients whose backgrounds, identities, and life circumstances may differ from their own experiences.

This 5-session webinar training will educate health professionals about several marginalized populations, including key characteristics and considerations for effectively working with diverse clients and patients. Learners will be introduced to the concepts of implicit bias and social justice as well as focusing on specific populations including LGBTQIA+, seniors/older adults, people with varied racial/cultural/ethnic identities, and people living with disabilities. This program will provide information and discussion about what health professionals need to know in order to collaborate with their patients/clients for the best outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  • Learners will gain an understanding of the concept of implicit bias by identifying and discussing key concepts related to cultural competency.
  • Learners will be able to identify and describe characteristics of and considerations for working with several marginalized populations.

Angel Collie – Assistant Director of the Duke Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity

Angel grew up in rural North Carolina and, before joining the team at Duke, spent his days working as the Assistant Director of the LGBTQ Center at UNC-CH. His return to UNC (where he received his BA in Religious Studies with minors in both Women’s Studies and Sexuality Studies) came after obtaining a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School.

Angel is a member of the MCC Governing Board, The Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies Transgender Roundtable, the Freedom Center for Social Justice board, and is co-faculty for the National LGBTQ Task Force, CLGS and Freedom Center for Social Justice Transgender Seminarian Cohort. Angel is proud of his involvement in the 2006 and 2007 Soulforce Equality Rides and the nine years he served as staff with MCC. Most recently, he was honored to be included in the 2014 “Trans 100.”

Angel’s favorite thing is to travel and he has done so extensively, often through his work as the intersection of spirituality, sexuality and gender identity and expression. He is super excited to be back in the Southern part of heaven where he lives with his partner, two cats, and two Australian Shepherds named Scooter and Scout.

 

Benjamin Reese – Vice President of the Duke Office for Institutional Equity

Dr. Reese is a clinical psychologist and the Vice President for Institutional Equity at Duke University and Duke University Health System.  He has responsibility for diversity/inclusion, affirmative action/equal opportunity, and harassment/discrimination prevention and complaint handling for faculty and staff on the undergraduate campus, graduate and professional schools, and a health system comprised of three hospitals and outpatient clinics.  He is adjunct faculty in the departments of Community & Family Medicine, and Psychology & Neuroscience.

Dr. Reese has served as the Associate Director of the Fifth Avenue Center for Counseling & Psychotherapy in New York City, the founder and Director of the Institute for the Study of Culture & Ethnicity at this Center, and the Ombudsperson for the Rockefeller Foundation.

His areas of specialization are implicit bias, race relations, diversity/inclusion training, conflict resolution and cross-cultural communication. He has more than 45 years experience in the fields of race relations and diversity and is a highly sought after national speaker, workshop facilitator and consultant to higher education, not-for-profit organizations, and the corporate environment.

He has represented both the International Council of Psychologists and the World Federation for Mental Health (non-governmental organizations) at the United Nations. Dr. Reese is the immediate past president of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE) and served on its founding board.  In addition, he serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal Liberal Education, and is a reviewer for the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education. He is a member of the N.C. Advisory Board of the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and is a Board Member of The Center For Documentary Studies.

In 2016, the North Carolina Business Journal awarded him their Lifetime Diversity Achievement Award in recognition of almost 50 years of leadership of issues of race relations and diversity.

 

Emily Chavez – Associate Director of the Duke Center for Multicultural Affairs

In her role as CMA Associate Director, Emily provides multicultural and social justice education and leadership development training to students. She also supervises the Student Development Coordinators.

Emily brings over twelve years of experience in education. She was a high school teacher for six years, first in Philadelphia, then in Durham. Previous to joining the CMA, Emily served as the Outreach Program Coordinator for the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Duke for five years. She co-founded the African Diaspora Fellows Program, a professional development program for secondary teachers, and the Learning through Languages High School Research Symposium, a competition for NC world language students. Emily holds a B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology and Education with a minor in Women’s Studies from Swarthmore College, an M.A. in Teaching from Duke University, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from North Carolina State University.

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Emily has lived in Durham for most of her adult life. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, listening to music, laughing, dancing, feeding people, and hiking. Her greatest joy has been raising three amazing children.

 

Kahli Zietlow – Duke Medicine, Geriatrics Fellow

Dr. Kahli Zietlow is originally from Michigan and completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan. She completed medical school and Internal Medicine Residency training at Duke University Hospital and is currently completing a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at Duke.

Throughout her medical training, she has been nurturing a passion for Geriatrics and the unique care of older adults.  She has participated extensively in research on cognitive impairment and dementia. She has published work on how genetics can affect risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and research understanding how cognitive impairment affects risks of complications after surgery.

She also works with faculty at the medical school to develop curricula on safe discharge practices for students. For the academic year of 2018-2019, she will do an advanced fellowship in Geriatric Medicine, with a research project focused on the relationship between cognitive impairment and the ability to provide consent for medical treatment.

 

Leigh Fickling – Director of the Duke Disability Management System

Leigh Fickling is the Director of the Disability Management System at Duke University and Health System.  Leigh holds a Master of Education degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Master of Science in Strategic Leadership from Mountain State University.  Leigh holds a Juris Doctorate degree from the Charleston School of Law.  Prior to joining Duke seven years ago, Leigh was a solo practitioner with a small family law practice focusing on education law, disability law, and domestic relations.  With over 20 years of higher education experience, Leigh has previously served in executive leadership roles such as the Dean of Student Affairs and Dean of Campus Life.  Leigh’s area of expertise is in disability management and the implementation of reasonable accommodations in the classroom and the workplace.  The Duke University Disability Management System, under Leigh’s direction, serves as a central clearinghouse for disability-related information, procedures and services and works to ensure efforts to maintain an accessible, hospitable working and learning environment for persons with disabilities.
