Leading Others in Writing for Health

What is the cost of the course?

The course registration fee is $525.00.  Those that register by the noted early registration deadline qualify for a 10% discount.

Duke Affiliates qualify for a 15% discount at the time of their registration. This discount is not eligible to be combined with the early registration discount. Duke Affiliates are defined as Duke Employees, Duke Registered Volunteers, and Duke Students.

What materials are provided, and are there any text books required for this program?

Upon your arrival you will be provided with a handbook.  You may also receive additional handouts during the course of the program.  There are no additional required materials.

What is the format for the training?

Check-in for the program will begin at 8:30 am on Day 1, and continue until 5 pm.  Day 2 of the program will run 9 am – 5 pm.

Each day will include a mixture of class presentations and discussions, with an emphasis on experiential learning through writing exercises.

What does the registration fee cover?

The registration fee includes printed course materials, three days of instructor-led training, as well as continuing education credits (dependent on completion of requirements noted above).  Beverage service is included an all days of the program, and lunch. is included on Day 2 of the program

What course content will be covered?

Leading Others in Writing for Health is a training program that will provide knowledge, experiences, and skills that enable you to use writing as a tool with clients to facilitate their health and as a tool to support your resiliency and good health as well.

Objectives for the 2-day training include:

  • An understanding of the theoretical and research basis of writing for health
  • How the 5 types of writing contributes to resiliency
  • Learning the Pennebaker paradigm
  • Elements of expressive, transactional, poetic, affirmative, and legacy writing and their relationships in writing for health and resiliency
  • Understanding writing for health as a reflective practice for professionals

I am traveling to Duke IM from out of the area. What airport is closest? Do I need to rent a car? What are my options for lodging?

The closest airport is the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). The airport is approximately 18 miles from our location.

Course participants often forgo rental cars in lieu of the shuttle service that may be provided by their lodging choice. However, others find that a rental car provides more freedom for them to venture around the Durham/Raleigh/Chapel Hill area restaurants, shops and entertainment venues outside of the training hours.
