Leadership Program FAQs

If you have a question about the Leadership Program, or would like to speak to someone to get more information, please contact Damian Gallina, program manager of the Leadership Program, at damian.gallina@duke.edu.

The potential to transform healthcare has never been greater, but demands a new type of leader. Creating a culture of health and well-being in this country requires more than clinical or administrative skills. We need leaders who can think critically, create collaborative environments and actively involve communities, patients and families in their own care. This new environment requires leaders with expertise in health and well-being and business acumen. They also need the leadership skills to advance change throughout their own organizations and beyond.

The Leadership Program in Health and Well-Being at Duke University is designed to create this new type of leader for the future of medicine — one grounded in the philosophy of health and well-being.  Graduates of this program will join a national cadre of leaders dedicated to transforming practice and improving the health of the nation; leaders who fully embrace a personalized approach to comprehensive medical care that optimizes health.

Duke’s distinguished set of programs in medicine, leadership and business are uniquely positioned to establish a transformative cross-disciplinary training, which is foundational to the health and well-being approach.  The Leadership Program is a collaboration between Duke Integrative Medicine and the Duke Fuqua School of Business.

This program is designed for individuals who have already demonstrated leadership – both healthcare professionals and administrators – who want to take their skills and organizations to the next level.

Funding for the creation and launch of the Leadership Program in Health and Well-Being was provided by The Bravewell Collaborative, a community of philanthropists dedicated to bringing about optimal health and healing for individuals and society.

Graduates of the program return to their organizations prepared to lead transformative change.

Working closely with world-class faculty, participants conduct a comprehensive personal assessment to evaluate their own strengths and needs before progressing into course work. The program includes work in personal transformation through a focus on the role of mindfulness and self-awareness in health and well-being. It also emphasizes the importance of developing strategic relationships both within one’s institution and beyond.

Understanding the challenges of creating a successful business model in health and well-being, the program examines business and financial models currently in use, highlighting other leaders’ experiences and showcasing viable centers. Program graduates receive personalized counsel to create a detailed, tailored business project to help them implement health and well-being strategies within their own organizations.
