The Dr. Tracy Gaudet Pre-Med Mentorship Program
This one year pilot program is designed to support the Scholar’s career trajectory, increase leadership capacity in medical school and beyond, and allow working mentorship in a unique multidisciplinary academic environment which is developing new models of healthcare. The core experience includes: Research, Clinical Services, Education, Healthcare Policy
Duke Medical Student Retreat- Annual, Elective
An elective weekend retreat is provided annually for medical students at the beginning of the academic year. Retreat activities center on self-care and team building.
Lunch & Learn Series for 1st Year Duke Medical Students
Monthly lunch conferences are focused on topics of interest to the students as reflected in a student survey administered during the first monthly session. These range from CAM interventions such as Acupuncture and Nutrition to broader topics such as Physician Burnout.
Clinical Core Modules for 2nd Year Duke Medical Students- Oncology
Mind-Body Medicine: Skill Building & Self-Care Workshop – Pilot 2007
This 4-session experiential workshop offers students at the Duke University School of Medicine a unique opportunity to learn about the science of mind-body interactions and health, while developing effective stress management and self-care skills to use in everyday life. In consultation with the Duke Integrative Medicine Education Committee, Dean Caroline Haynes, and supervisory faculty from the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C., Drs. Jeff Greeson and Michelle Pearce adapted a core curriculum designed to meet the self-care needs of Duke medical students. Evaluation of the pilot program in October 2007 demonstrated that students who completed the workshop reported decreased stress, increased mindfulness, and healthy changes in self-care behaviors, including nutrition, exercise, and daily stress reduction & relaxation practices.
Integrative Medicine Selective for 2nd Year Duke Medical Students
This two week selective allows 2nd year Duke Medical students to shadow integrative physicians and learn about integrative therapeutic services and whole person care. During this 2-week Selective, students receive training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, attend Duke Integrative Medicine weekly case conferences, and shadow clinicians in the Duke Integrative Medicine clinic.
Medical Student Research Year for 3rd Year Duke Medical Students – 2008-2009
Integrative Medicine Elective for 4th Year Duke Medical Students
This four week selective is an intensive introduction to integrative medicine concepts. Students shadow integrative physicians and other Duke Integrative Medicine providers to gain a greater depth of knowledge about and experience in integrative medicine and holistic approaches to healthcare and healing. In addition, this four-week, full-time fourth-year elective explores the issues presented in the second-year course in significantly more depth and seeks to link with each student’s medical career interests. Duke Integrative Medicine faculty and staff mentor and teach in this elective, which focuses on self-care, self-inquiry, health assessment, evidence assessment in complementary and alternative medicine, and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.
Integrative Medicine Fair (Required for Capstone)
This annual fair is a requirement for all 4th year medical students to introduce students to the different modalities in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). These include the five NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) classifications (i.e. Mind Body Therapies, Alternative Medical Systems, Biologically Based Therapies, Manipulative and Body Based Therapies, and Energy Therapies). Some have a strong historical, clinical or experimental evidence base for efficacy, and others may not. Over 20 practitioners from Duke and the surrounding communities participate in this four hour half day fair.
