Duke Integrative Medicine is among the nation's leading institutions devoted to transformative medical practice. We combine the best that Western medicine has to offer with proven complementary therapies. At the center of our model is mindfulness, a present moment awareness that has been shown to promote healing, improve medical conditions, and enhance overall well-being.

An emphasis on Personal Mindfulness Practice

A fundamental principle of mindfulness-based stress reduction is that in order to teach or use mindfulness optimally it is important to have a firm grounding in personal mindfulness practice. Significant portions of this program will be experiential. Participants will be provided encouragement, extensive instruction, comprehensive support materials, and ample time for developing or deepening their personal mindfulness practice during this eight day training experience.

Over the course of two four-day sessions, the training will include:

  • A review of research findings and issues relevant to studying mindfulness in clinical settings.
  • Core skills for presenting and teaching mindfulness to others, including other professionals.
  • Information about other mindfulness-based approaches, for example: eating and weight-loss, and mindfulness in health coaching.
  • Networking/resource connections that participants may draw upon in their work to continue to use mindfulness more effectively and extensively.
  • Context for understanding the larger world of meditation, some of the relevant cultural and spiritual issues, and especially the contribution of Buddhist perspectives and the integration of mindfulnessbased techniques with existing approaches
  • A nine-session Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class.

NOTE: Completion of this training alone does not meet established standards for teaching MBSR.
